Air India Express Boeing 737-800 Carrying 190 People Crashes

At least 17 people were killed and more than 100 injured when an Air India Express flight crashed after skidding off a runway in heavy rain at at Calicut International Airport, Kozhikode, India, officials say.

Air India Express Boeing 737-800 (VT-AXH) operating flight IX 1344 from Dubai to Kozhikode overran the runway at Calicut International Airport, breaking apart after falling down an embankment. Aír Express Boeing 737-800 landed at 7:41pm local time.

As per the flight manifest, there were 190 people on flight IX 1344 including 174 adult passengers,10 infants, 4 cabin crew and 2 pilots.

“Unfortunately, 16 people have lost their lives. I offer my heartfelt condolences to their next of kin & pray for speedy recovery of the injured. As per the initial reports rescue operations are on and passengers are being taken to hospital for medical care,” the civil aviation ministry Hardeep Singh Puri said in the statement.

“Because of the weather conditions, he could not land the first time, so he did a turnaround and tried to approach it from a different direction,” said Puri.

Air India Express passenger plane was repatriating Indians stranded by the COVID-19 pandemic.
